  • LATVIAN FOOTPRINTS IN CA: May 20, 1873 marked a historic day: the birth of the blue jean. It was on that day that Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis obtained a U.S. patent on the process of putting rivets in men’s work pants for the very first time. Jacob Davis was born in Riga, Latvia, 1831. He worked for Levis Strauss company until his death in 1908, in San Francisco. Read more here.
  • California is home to the largest number of people in the United States who claim Latvian ancestry. Bay Area (combining San Francisco, San Jose, Santa Rosa, and Vallejo) together account for more than 3,500 Latvians. In comparison in 1930s there were around 1400 Latvians in California, 1000 of them living in San Francisco. More statistics on Latvians in USA here.
